The REB looks at your application and they want to make it better. So you will probably, a student and most faculty members are never approved outright, will thank you for your application. Wonderful. Go ahead. There’s always questions from an REB. So you’d never be worried about those. You put your best foot forward and try and explain everything that you’re doing. And the REB, will come back and inevitably there will be questions, but all it is is questions. You’ll get a question and a letter back with questions like we don’t understand this about that, have you thought about… So they won’t say no. We as an REB, have never said no to an application. An REB is all about getting the application to a level and get the researcher to a level where they know what they’re doing. And they too have thought about all of the things that need to be thought about. Because any researchers, faculty members, and otherwise the students miss something or forget something. So the REB is there to help make that a really good application and to empower that researcher to do good work in the best ethical way that is possible to do that research, Like they want it to be done ethically well. But they’re not the board to run around and say, No, you cannot do that research. The other thing I think I want to demystify, It’s like people think our REB chair and the board I have to go in front of a board, No. The people are there to help you and make it a good application and get you. They’re there to help in any way they can and offer advice and ask you to, you should make this better. One big thing is in consent forms. Everybody thinks a consent form has to be very complex and wordy and big words and complicated jargon. Often the REB will come back and go, Oh, dumb that puppy down, you know, just make it simple and straightforward. So your participants understand. Don’t use jargon, and lingo and all that kind of stuff. So you might have to redo your consent form or your information sheet, but they’re there to help. That’s a helpful thing. They want to help you with that. So they don’t say no. They facilitate the way in which to get you to say yes, to get you to a yes. They never just say no. So that’s the other thing. They’re not the no board or the you must. They’re the hey, Let’s do it this way because it’s going to make it better. So that’s the other thing Never be worried about going, writing your stuff and sending it to a board because they’re there to help you. That’s definitely good to know. I haven’t sent one myself but You do know that bit of stigma behind that. So it’s that they’re almost proofreading it for you and like here and try this one. Now try this. Right And so they give you feedback and say, Yeah, you’ve tried this, but this could be better or maybe you should probably do that or Oh my gosh, you know, take that out or… But they’re there to get you to yes. They’re not there to say no.
