So doing an ethics application is just a process. It’s not a, it’s not, it’s just a thing and that going through that process helps you wrap your head around how to shape a project. How to ask better questions, maybe questions that you might not have thought up. And it also helps you on the front end of your research into really thinking about who do I want as my participants, and how am I going to find them? Like it’s fine to say it. Talk to 27 social workers but you’re a student. I personally would have to think long and hard myself. How would I even find twenty, the names and addresses and phone numbers or emails or connect with 27 social workers? So I would have to be thinking about these processes and the integrity and the ethics of it. But I’m also thinking about the common sense application of at all to make my project better. so that when you do get your ethics application approved A: you’ve thought about it and B: when it does, can approve it. It’s already ingrained in the research that you’re going to be doing. You’ve already thought about all these things. And it comes through in your interaction with your human participants. and it makes for a better project because you’ve thought about those things before. It’s nothing like saying, Well, I’ve filled in all of these blanks and now I have my ethics approval. But gee, I don’t know how am I going to find, how am I going to connect with 27 social workers and hope that they help me? So you’ve thought about these things because it’s a process. It enhances your project because you’ve had to think about all the steps along the way. You’ve thought, you’ve had to think about them with an ethical and, a high integrity sort of lens on to begin with. So when you get to the point of finishing your application, your application is approved. You are really ready to go out and do that research. And you’re doing it already with, I think sometimes without even really knowing what’s happened to you, is that we really maybe didn’t blindside you or anything. We just help change and put a new conversation in your head about ethics and the integrity of research. When you’re doing research with human beings.
